Artistic Ironwork's studio is fully equipped with historic forging machinery as well as modern fabrication and engineering equipment. This allows us to undertake a wide range of projects, from small fittings and fixtures to large scale projects in forged and fabricated steel. We work with a number of metals including steel, corten and stainless steel as well as non ferrous metals such as copper, brass and bronze.

New wrought iron and wrought iron restoration

We are one of the last companies in New Zealand producing wrought ironwork with genuinely hand forged components. This allows us to create our work to unique designs which can not be produced to the same quality by our competitors. Because of the quality of our work we have received a number commissions where an extremely high level of craftsmanship was essential including work for luxury super yacht Mine Games and Auckland's Langham Hotel.

We are also proud to be one of the only companies in the country who can offer a traditionally forged service, creating work using ancient techniques that have almost been lost, such as forge welding and mortise and tennon joints. Because of these skills we have been involved in a number of ironwork restoration projects for Auckland Council and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, including the traditional restoration of the 160 year old hurdle fence in the Pah homestead Monte Cecilia park.

Design

Artistic architectural metalwork can enhance the overall design concept of a building be it entrance gates, boundary railings or internal fittings such as metal balustrades, handrails and ironmongery. We have the ability to design work to match any style of architecture from historic to contemporary.

All work is designed within pre-agreed budgets or, often when working with a client’s design concept, won through tender procedure. By combining our experience and skills in a wide variety of techniques and materials we are often able to provide economical solutions to otherwise complex designs concepts. Whilst we design the majority of the work we create we happy to work with our client’s design ideas.

In late 2012 or toilet shroud designs for Redwoods Park in Rotorua were short listed in the top two.

Services for artists and designers

Because we are artists ourselves we have an understanding of the shapes and lines that create quality sculptural work and have worked with many artists to help them realize their dreams. We can work directly from an artists marquette or from a design drawing to produce large scale sculpture. Most artist's drop in a marquette for us to enlarge however some prefer to work side by side with us in the workshop so they can be involved in the process.

We can create sculpture in forged and fabricated steel, stainless steel and bronze using a mixture of techniques and we also have a foundry to cast work in bronze, brass and aluminum.

Some of the artists we have worked with include: Caroline Robinson, Anna Korver, Lauren Kitts, James Wright, Greg Piper and Stuart Laird.

Creating Anna Korver's Blackbird, 2010 forged and fabricated steel.

Caroline Robinson's Dream Vortex, 2007 forged and fabricated steel. Stuart Laird sculpture under construction 2009.

Blacksmithing courses and training

Chris runs courses a few times a year to help preserve the craft and pass on skills to help others get started. His beginners class gives an introduction to the craft, making simple tools that are used every day in the blacksmiths shop and his advanced class teaches more advanced methods such as Forge welding and the forging of mortice and tenon joints. If you are interested in learning more and finding out the dates of the next course email Chris : chris@artisticironwork.co.nz

The next course will be held at the KorverMolloy Gallery in New Plymouth August 24th and 25th 2013
